১. AS YOU LIKE IT

As You Like It William Shakespeare-এর একটি pastoral comedy / romantic comedyPastoral comedy বলতে এমন comedy বোঝায়, যেখানে court বা নগরজীবনের জটিলতার বিপরীতে প্রকৃতি, বনভূমি, গ্রামীণ স্বাধীনতা, প্রেম, ছদ্মবেশ ও আত্ম-আবিষ্কার গুরুত্বপূর্ণ হয়ে ওঠে।

Shakespeare-এর নাটকটির প্রধান সাহিত্যিক উৎস ছিল Thomas Lodge-এর pastoral romance Rosalynde: Euphues’ Golden Legacy; সেই কাহিনির পেছনে আবার The Tale of Gamelyn-এর প্রভাব ছিল।

Writer William Shakespeare
Genre Pastoral / Romantic Comedy
Major Setting Forest of Arden
Heroine Rosalind
Hero Orlando
Rosalind's cousin Celia
Rosalind's disguise Ganymede
Celia's disguise Aliena
Important philosopher-like character Jaques

Character Flow

Rosalind → disguised as Ganymede → loves Orlando
Celia → disguised as Aliena → accompanies Rosalind
Orlando → loves Rosalind → enters Forest of Arden
Duke Senior → exiled Duke → lives in Forest of Arden
Jaques → melancholic observer → “All the world’s a stage” speech

Famous Quotations — As You Like It

PDF-এ কয়েকটি অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ quotation একসঙ্গে দেওয়া হয়েছে: “All the world’s a stage…”, “Sweet are the uses of adversity”, “Men are April when they woo, December when they wed”, এবং “Blow, blow, thou winter wind…”

① “All the world’s a stage…”

Seven Ages of Man speech নামেও পরিচিত।

Exam Formula:
All the world’s a stage → As You Like It → Jaques → Seven Ages of Man

PDF-এর অন্যান্য পরীক্ষার প্রশ্নেও quotationটির author হিসেবে William Shakespeare এবং source হিসেবে As You Like It চিহ্নিত হয়েছে।

② “Sweet are the uses of adversity”

BCS: “Sweet are the uses of adversity” is quoted from—As You Like It

২. UNDER THE GREENWOOD TREE

এটি Shakespeare-এর স্বতন্ত্র কোনো বড় narrative poem নয়; এটি As You Like It-এর Act II, Scene V-এর একটি song, যা Amiens গান করেন।

Key Symbols

Greenwood
Sweet bird’s throat পাখির melodious song
Ambition shun
Winter and rough weather

Tree → forest, “Here shall he see / No enemy” অংশে Here → nature, এবং forest-এর enemy হিসেবে winter / cold winter and rough weather ধরা হয়েছে।

Under the Greenwood Tree → William Shakespeare
Major attraction → No enemy
Sweet bird’s throat → melodious song of the bird

৩. THE MERCHANT OF VENICE

Venice plot → Antonio + Bassanio + Shylock + bond
Belmont plot → Portia + three caskets + marriage

Character
Portia wealthy heiress of Belmont
Shylock Jewish moneylender
Jessica Shylock-
Lorenzo Jessica-
Nerissa Portia-র attendant
Gratiano Bassanio-

Compact Diagram

Bassanio wants Portia

Antonio needs money for Bassanio

Shylock lends 3,000 ducats

Bond = one pound of Antonio’s flesh if unpaid

Shylock bond

Portia disguises herself as lawyer Balthazar

Courtroom argument

Antonio saved

⚠️ Title Trap

The Merchant = Antonio, Shylock

Antonio

Shylock — BCS Hotspot

BCS: “Shylock is a character in—” → The Merchant of Venice
BCS: “The Merchant of Venice is a Shakespearean play about—” → a Jew

Famous Quotations — Merchant of Venice

PDF-এ উল্লেখিত quotationগুলোর মধ্যে রয়েছে “All that glitters is not gold”, “Love is blind”, এবং “I am a Jew. Hath not a Jew eyes?…”

Textual Correction

আধুনিক প্রচলিত proverb হলো “All that glitters is not gold”, কিন্তু Shakespeare-এর মূল wording “All that glisters is not gold”।

“I am a Jew. Hath not a Jew eyes?”

এটি Shylock-এর speech, The Merchant of Venice, Act 3 Scene 1।

“Love is blind”

PDF-এর MCQ অনুযায়ী speaker → Jessica

৪. THE COMEDY OF ERRORS

The Comedy of Errors Shakespeare-এর প্রারম্ভিক comedy/farceগুলোর একটি।

Twin Structure

Twin Pair
Antipholus of Syracuse এক twin brother
Antipholus of Ephesus অন্য twin brother
Dromio of Syracuse servant twin
Dromio of Ephesus servant twin

Separation of twins → Same city → Same names → Mistaken identities → escalating confusion → recognition → family reunion

Genre Question

৫. THE TEMPEST

The Tempest Shakespeare-এর late romance; পরীক্ষায় সাধারণত comedy/romance, এবং বিশেষভাবে Shakespeare’s last play / swansong হিসেবে জিজ্ঞাসা করা হয়।

PDF-এ ৩৭তম BCS-এর “Shakespeare's last play” প্রশ্নের উত্তর The Tempest এবং অন্য প্রশ্নে একে Shakespeare's swansong বলা হয়েছে।

Character
Prospero deposed Duke of Milan; magician
Miranda Prospero-র daughter
Ariel spirit; Prospero-র servant
Caliban island inhabitant; Sycorax-এর son
Ferdinand Prince of Naples
Alonso King of Naples
Gonzalo Prospero-র well-wisher
Stephano, Trinculo comic characters

Story Flow

Prospero = Duke of Milan
↓ Antonio usurps him
Prospero + Miranda exiled to island

Prospero learns magic; Ariel serves him

Creates Tempest / Storm

Alonso + Antonio + Ferdinand etc. arrive

Ferdinand ❤️ Miranda

Prospero confronts enemies

Forgiveness rather than revenge

Prospero regains dukedom + renounces magic

Themes

Power → betrayal → exile → magic → revenge → forgiveness → reconciliation → freedom

বিশেষভাবে Ariel wants freedom, Caliban represents contested ideas of servitude/colonial possession, আর Prospero-র magic ত্যাগ নাটকের অন্যতম প্রধান symbolic moment।

৬. THE RAPE OF LUCRECE

The Rape of Lucrece Shakespeare-এর একটি narrative poem, নাটক নয়।

The Rape of Lucrece → Narrative poem → William Shakespeare

Concept

Momentary desire → immoral act → guilt/shame → personal tragedy → wider political consequence

৭. “SHALL I COMPARE THEE TO A SUMMER’S DAY?” — SONNET 18

4 + 4 + 4 + 2 = 14 lines

Sonnet Structure

অংশ Lines ভাব
Quatrain 1 1–4 Beloved > summer

Theme

Beauty + Time + Death + Poetry = Immortality

“Eye of heaven”

এখানে eye of heaven = Sun

“Eternal lines”

Final Couplet-
