Chapter-11: Part Of Speech- Verb (Part-2)
Linking • Copulative • Inchoative • Factitive • Cognate • Group/Phrasal • Semi-modal • Common • Causative • Stative & Dynamic Verbs
Verb-এর Advanced Classification BCS ও অন্যান্য competitive examination-এর জন্য অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ, কারণ এখানে শুধু “verb চেনা” নয়; একই verb sentence-এর context অনুযায়ী Linking, Copulative, Inchoative, Factitive, Cognate, Causative, Stative বা Dynamic হিসেবে কাজ করতে পারে। বিশেষভাবে become/look/taste/feel-এর Linking use, go mad/come true-এর Copulative use, grow dark-এর Inchoative use, elect him captain-এর Factitive pattern, dream a dream-এর Cognate Object, take after-এর Group/Phrasal Verb, need/dare-এর Semi-modal use এবং rise–raise, lie–lay, sit–set-এর Causative relationship খুবই high-yield।
| Priority | Topic | পরীক্ষায় মূল Focus |
|---|---|---|
| ★★★ | Linking Verb | become, seem, look, taste, feel, grow, turn |
| ★★★ | Copulative & Inchoative | go mad, come true, grow dark |
| ★★★ | Factitive Verb | call him a fool, elect him captain |
| ★★★ | Causative Verb | rise→raise, lie→lay, fall→fell, sit→set |
| ★★★ | Stative Verb | progressive restriction + meaning change |
| ★★★ | Semi-modal | dare, need, used to, ought to |
| ★★☆ | Cognate Object | live a life, dream a dream |
| ★★☆ | Group/Phrasal Verb | take after, look after, put off |
| ★★☆ | Dynamic vs Stative | think, have, taste, see-এর contextual change |
| ★★☆ | Complement Structure | S+V+C এবং S+V+O+C |
১. Advanced Verb Classification — Master Map
Verb-কে শুধু Transitive/Intransitive হিসেবে ভাগ করলে English verb system সম্পূর্ণ বোঝা যায় না। কোনো verb subject-এর state identify করতে পারে, state change বোঝাতে পারে, object-এর নতুন identity তৈরি করতে পারে, cause করাতে পারে, particle/preposition-এর সঙ্গে নতুন lexical meaning তৈরি করতে পারে অথবা state/action-এর পার্থক্য প্রকাশ করতে পারে। এই কারণে advanced classification দরকার।

২. Linking Verb — সঠিক সংজ্ঞা
Linking Verb বা Copular Verb হলো এমন verb যা subject-এর সঙ্গে কোনো subject complement-এর সম্পর্ক স্থাপন করে; এটি সাধারণত direct object-এর ওপর action transfer করে না, বরং subject কে কী/কেমন/কোন অবস্থায়—তা প্রকাশ করে। যেমন be, become, seem, appear, look, feel, smell, taste, sound, remain, get ইত্যাদি। Cambridge-ও linking verb-কে object না নিয়ে subject সম্পর্কে অতিরিক্ত তথ্য দেওয়া verb হিসেবে ব্যাখ্যা করে এবং appear, feel, look, seem, sound, be, get, remain, smell, taste, become ইত্যাদি core examples দেয়।
আলোচ্য অংশে to be, become, look, seem, remain, appear, make, run, go, grow, turn, taste, feel, smell, weigh, constitute, equal, represent ইত্যাদিকে linking use-এ দেখানো হয়েছে এবং He will make a good player; The weather has turned cold; Honey tastes sweet; The dog went mad উদাহরণ দেওয়া হয়েছে।
🧩 Linking Structure
SUBJECT ─────► LINKING VERB ─────► SUBJECT COMPLEMENT
│ │
└────────────── same entity ───────────┘
He became a politician.
Weather turned cold.
Honey tastes sweet.
The dog went mad.
এখানে He = politician, weather = cold, honey = sweet, dog = mad—অর্থাৎ complement subject-কে identify বা describe করছে।
৩. সম্ভাব্য পরীক্ষার প্রশ্ন
He became a politician. Here ‘became’ is a/an—
ক. transitive verb
খ. linking verb
গ. action verb
ঘ. intransitive verb
✅ সঠিক উত্তর: Linking Verb
কারণ: a politician কোনো direct object নয়; এটি subject He-এর নতুন identity প্রকাশ করছে—He = a politician। তাই structure S + Linking Verb + Subject Complement।
৪. Linking Verb চেনার “= Test”
Linking verb identification-এর সবচেয়ে কার্যকর shortcut:
Subject = Complement হলে Linking হওয়ার সম্ভাবনা বেশি।
Rahim is a teacher. → Rahim = teacher
He became angry. → He = angry
The soup tastes good. → Soup = good
The sky turned red. → Sky = red
কিন্তু—
He tasted the soup.
এখানে He ≠ soup, বরং the soup direct object; তাই tasted transitive action verb।
৫. Linking Verb-এর পরে Adjective কেন?
Linking verb-এর পরে subject-এর quality/state describe করতে সাধারণত adjective ব্যবহৃত হয়:
✅ The flower smells sweet.
✅ She looks beautiful.
✅ The soup tastes delicious.
❌ The flower smells sweetly — যদি flower-এর smell-এর quality বোঝানো হয়।
কারণ sweet/beautiful/delicious verb-কে manner হিসেবে modify করছে না; subject-এর state/quality describe করছে।
৬. একই Verb — Linking ও Action দুটোই
| Linking Use | Action/Other Use |
|---|---|
| The soup tastes good. | She tasted the soup. |
| He looks tired. | He looked at me. |
| The rose smells sweet. | She smelled the perfume. |
| I feel tired. | I felt the surface. |
| He grew angry. | He grew vegetables. |
| The sky turned red. | He turned the key. |
Golden Rule
Verb-এর dictionary name নয়, sentence-এ তার complement pattern দেখো।
৭. Copulative Verb
Traditional grammar-এ যেসব intransitive verb adjective/noun complement নিয়ে subject-এর state বা identity প্রকাশ করে এবং be-verb-এর মতো linking function নেয়, তাদের Copulative Verb বলা হয়। এই category মূলত Linking Verb-এরই traditional sub-type। আলোচ্য অংশে go mad, come true-এর মতো construction দিয়ে এটি দেখানো হয়েছে।
Examples
The dog went mad.
→ এখানে went মানে “গেল” নয়; became mad।
My dream came true.
→ came মানে physical arrival নয়; became true।
🔄 Lexical Meaning → Copulative Meaning
go = যাওয়া → go mad = পাগল হয়ে যাওয়া
come = আসা → come true = সত্য হওয়া
turn = ঘোরা → turn red = লাল হয়ে যাওয়া
grow = বৃদ্ধি পাওয়া → grow old = বৃদ্ধ হওয়া
৮. সম্ভাব্য পরীক্ষার প্রশ্ন
What kind of verb is ‘went’ in “The dog went mad”?
ক. Transitive
খ. Causative
গ. Copulative
ঘ. Factitive
✅ সঠিক উত্তর: Copulative Verb
কারণ: went এখানে movement বোঝায় না; subject-এর state change dog → mad প্রকাশ করছে এবং mad subject complement।
৯. Linking বনাম Copulative — পার্থক্য
Copulative মূলত traditional term; modern grammar-এ সাধারণত copular/linking verb বলা হয়। তাই BCS-type MCQ-তে options-এ Copulative থাকলে go mad, come true, turn pale জাতীয় construction-এ সেটিই expected traditional answer; modern grammatical description-এ এগুলো linking/copular verb use।
১০. Inchoative Verb
Inchoative Verb এমন verb যা কোনো state-এর শুরু, পরিবর্তন বা নতুন অবস্থায় প্রবেশ প্রকাশ করে—অর্থাৎ “become” ধরনের change-of-state meaning দেয়। আলোচ্য অংশে become, come, go, grow, get, fall, run, turn, wear ইত্যাদিকে inchoative use-এর examples হিসেবে দেওয়া হয়েছে।
Examples
He got tired. → tired হয়ে গেল
He became rich overnight. → rich হলো
His dream came true. → true হলো
It is growing dark. → ক্রমে dark হচ্ছে
🌱 State Change Model
OLD STATE NEW STATE
│ │
└──── INCHOATIVE VERB ───────►│
not tired ── got ───────► tired
not dark ── grew ──────► dark
not rich ── became ────► rich
not true ── came ──────► true
১১. সম্ভাব্য পরীক্ষার প্রশ্ন
Which sentence uses an inchoative verb?
ক. He was king.
খ. It is dark.
গ. He is weak.
ঘ. It is growing dark.
✅ সঠিক উত্তর: It is growing dark.
কারণ: is dark শুধু বর্তমান state; কিন্তু is growing dark একটি state পরিবর্তনের process—আলো থেকে অন্ধকার হওয়ার দিকে progression।
১২. Copulative বনাম Inchoative
দুটি category overlap করতে পারে, তবে focus আলাদা:
| Copulative | Inchoative |
|---|---|
| Subject + complement link | State change emphasises |
| He seems tired. | He grew tired. |
| Honey tastes sweet. | The sky turned red. |
| State/identity relation | becoming/change process |
সব Inchoative linking use copular nature-এর হতে পারে, কিন্তু সব Linking Verb Inchoative নয়। He is tired linking কিন্তু কোনো transition বোঝায় না।
১৩. Factitive Verb
Traditional grammar-এ Factitive Verb হলো এমন transitive verb যা direct object-এর পাশাপাশি এমন একটি complement নেয় যা object-কে নতুন identity/state দেয় বা object সম্পর্কে resultative description দেয়। আলোচ্য অংশে call, select, elect, nominate, choose, make ইত্যাদি দিয়ে S + V + O + C structure দেখানো হয়েছে।
Examples
We call him a genius.
They elected him captain.
They made him chairman.
এখানে—
him = Direct Object
a genius/captain/chairman = Object Complement
🧩 Factitive Structure
SUBJECT + FACTITIVE VERB + OBJECT + OBJECT COMPLEMENT
They elected him captain.
We call him a genius.
They made him chairman.
him = captain/genius/chairman
Modern grammar-এ এই pattern-কে সাধারণত complex-transitive construction বলা হয়।
১৪. Object Complement চেনার Formula
যদি—
Object = Complement
তাহলে complementটি Object Complement হওয়ার সম্ভাবনা বেশি।
They elected Rahim captain.
→ Rahim = captain
They painted the wall red.
→ wall = red (resulting state)
We consider him intelligent.
→ him = intelligent
১৫. Factitive vs Ordinary Transitive
Ordinary Transitive
I helped him.
S + V + O
এখানে him-এর পরে identity/state প্রকাশকারী complement নেই।
Factitive / Complex Transitive
I called him a fool.
S + V + O + C
এখানে him = a fool।
১৬. সম্ভাব্য পরীক্ষার প্রশ্ন
They elected him captain. Here ‘elected’ is—
ক. Transitive verb
খ. Reflexive verb
গ. Factitive verb
ঘ. Causative verb
✅ সঠিক উত্তর: Factitive Verb
কারণ: elected শুধু object him নেয়নি; captain objective complement হিসেবে him-এর নতুন office/identity নির্ধারণ করছে।
১৭. Factitive Sentence-এর Passive
Active:
We call him a genius.
Passive:
He is called a genius.
Passive হলে active-এর Object → Passive Subject, আর Object Complement → Subject Complement-এর মতো নতুন subject-কে describe/identify করে। আলোচ্য অংশে এই transformation সরাসরি দেখানো হয়েছে।
ACTIVE
We call [him] [a genius].
O OC
↓ Passive
PASSIVE
[He] is called [a genius].
S SC
১৮. Factitive vs Causative — অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ
Factitive → object-কে কী/কেমন করা/বলা/নির্বাচন করা হচ্ছে।
They elected him captain.
→ captain = identity.
Causative → subject অন্য person/thing-কে কোনো action করায় বা কোনো ঘটনা ঘটায়।
She made him leave.
→ him performs leave because she caused it.
Memory
Factitive = O + Complement
Causative = Cause + Do/Become
১৯. Cognate Verb & Cognate Object
Traditional grammar-এ কোনো verb তার নিজের noun form বা একই semantic root/family-এর noun-কে object হিসেবে নিলে সেই object-কে Cognate Object বলা হয়। আলোচ্য অংশে I live a simple life; I dreamt a wonderful dream examples দেওয়া হয়েছে।
Merriam-Webster-ও cognate substantive/object-এর example হিসেবে verb-এর সঙ্গে derivationally related noun object—যেমন “sing a song”—উল্লেখ করে।
Examples
live a life
dream a dream
sing a song
smile a smile
die a death
fight a fight
২০. Cognate Object — Meaning
“Cognate” মানে related by origin/derivation। তাই—
dreamt → dream
lived → life
sang → song
একই root/semantic family-এর relation থাকে।
২১. সম্ভাব্য পরীক্ষার প্রশ্ন
I dreamt a wonderful dream. Here ‘a wonderful dream’ is—
ক. Retained object
খ. Cognate object
গ. Reflexive object
ঘ. Factitive object
✅ সঠিক উত্তর: Cognate Object
কারণ: dream nounটি verb dreamt এর একই lexical family-এর।
২২. “Rani sang a song” — Cognate Object
Which sentence is an example of a cognate object?
✅ Rani sang a song.
কারণ sing ↔ song একই semantic/etymological family-এর।
২৩. Group Verb / Phrasal Verb
Verb-এর সঙ্গে particle/preposition/adverb যুক্ত হয়ে যদি একটি নতুন lexical meaning তৈরি হয়, সেটি broad traditional usage-এ Group Verb/Phrasal Verb/Verbal Idiom হিসেবে পড়ানো হয়। আলোচ্য অংশে take after উদাহরণটি দেওয়া হয়েছে।
Example
take = নেওয়া
take after = resemble
She takes after her mother.
= She resembles her mother.
২৪. সম্ভাব্য পরীক্ষার প্রশ্ন
She takes after her mother. ‘takes after’ is—
ক. verbal idiom
খ. phrasal verb
গ. regular verb
ঘ. intransitive verb
✅ Traditional exam context-এ Phrasal Verb / Verbal Idiom—দুটো label-ই দেখা যায়। আলোচ্য question-এ দুটো related option দেওয়া হয়েছে।
২৫. Phrasal Verb vs Prepositional Verb — Modern Precision
Modern grammar-এ সব “verb + preposition” একই category নয়।
Phrasal Verb
give up, put off, turn down
এখানে particle meaning বদলায় এবং অনেক ক্ষেত্রে separable:
turn down the offer
turn the offer down
Prepositional Verb
look after, depend on, listen to
Preposition-এর পরে object:
look after the child
Phrasal-prepositional Verb
put up with, look forward to
তিনটি component:
put + up + with
Competitive grammar-এ এগুলো সবকেই broad sense-এ Group Verb বলা হতে পারে।
২৬. Phrasal Verb — Transitivity
Phrasal verb transitive বা intransitive দুইটাই হতে পারে:
Turn off the light. → transitive
The plane took off. → intransitive
অতএব “phrasal verb = transitive” universal rule নয়; actual construction দেখতে হবে।
২৭. Semi-modal Verb
Dare, need, ought to এবং used to-কে Cambridge semi-modal বলে, কারণ এগুলোর কিছু বৈশিষ্ট্য modal verb-এর মতো এবং কিছু lexical/main verb-এর মতো।
আলোচ্য অংশে বিশেষভাবে need, dare, used to-এর modal ও main verb—দু’ধরনের use দেখানো হয়েছে।
🌳 Semi-modal Family
SEMI-MODAL
│
┌─────────────┼──────────────┐

modal / lexical modal / lexical habitual past
+ OUGHT TO
২৮. Dare — Modal Use
Modal/semi-modal হিসেবে:
How dare you touch me?
He dare not touch me.
এখানে:
- third-person -s নেই
- do-support প্রয়োজন নেই
- following verb = bare infinitive
- to নেই
আলোচ্য অংশে একই examples দেওয়া হয়েছে। Cambridge-ও semi-modal dare ও need negative/interrogative contexts-এ modal-like behaviour দেখায়।
২৯. Dare — Main Verb Use
Lexical/main verb হলে:
He dares to speak.
He does not dare to speak.
Did he dare to ask?
এখানে s, do/does/did, to-infinitive আসতে পারে।
Compare
| Semi-modal | Main Verb |
|---|---|
| He dare not go. | He doesn’t dare to go. |
| Dare he speak? | Does he dare to speak? |
| no -s | dares possible |
| bare infinitive | to-infinitive possible |
Cambridge এই modal-like এবং lexical-like double behaviour স্পষ্ট করে।
৩০. Need — Modal vs Main Verb
Semi-modal Need
You need not worry.
Need I say more?
→ no to, no third-person -s।
Lexical Need
You need to rest.
She needs to study.
You don’t need to come.
→ normal verb inflection + to-infinitive।
Cambridge You needn’t dress smartly বনাম You don’t need to dress smartly—দুটি structure-ই স্বীকৃত বলে।
৩১. সম্ভাব্য পরীক্ষার প্রশ্ন
Which of the following can be used both as a modal and a main verb?
ক. should
খ. would
গ. may
ঘ. dare
✅ সঠিক উত্তর: Dare
আর—
Which can be used as a modal as well as a main verb?
✅ Need
৩২. Used to — Semi-modal
used to + base verb অতীতের habitual state/action বোঝায় যা এখন আর সত্য নয়:
I used to play football.
He used to live in Dhaka.
Cambridge used toকে semi-modal family-এর অংশ হিসেবে দেখায়।
Negative/Question
Modern common pattern:
I didn’t use to smoke.
Did you use to play?
Formal/older form:
I used not to smoke.
৩৩. Ought To — Semi-modal
ought to + V₁ সাধারণত moral duty, advice বা expected action বোঝায়:
You ought to respect your parents.
Core modals-এর মতো ought person অনুযায়ী form পরিবর্তন করে না, কিন্তু অন্য core modal-এর বিপরীতে to নেয়—এই কারণেই semi-modal।
৩৪. Common Verb — Traditional Classification
আলোচ্য lecture-এ যে verb দ্বারা subject নিজে কাজ সম্পন্ন করে তাকে Common Verb বলা হয়েছে; example: He did it.
সম্ভাব্য প্রশ্ন
He did it. Here ‘did’ is—
✅ Common Verb — source-এর traditional terminology অনুযায়ী।
Modern Grammar Note
Contemporary grammar-এ “Common Verb” এই অর্থে standard major category নয়; did এখানে simply lexical/main verb (= performed) হিসেবে বিশ্লেষিত হয়। তাই BCS/legacy grammar-এ Common Verb, modern analysis-এ Main/Lexical Verb মনে রাখবে।
৩৫. Causative Verb — সঠিক ধারণা
Causative construction এমন structure যেখানে subject নিজে সরাসরি মূল action না করে অন্য ব্যক্তি/বস্তুকে সেই action করায় বা কোনো state/event ঘটায়। British Council causation-কে এক actor অন্য actor-কে কিছু করানো হিসেবে ব্যাখ্যা করে এবং make/get/cause/force জাতীয় pattern উল্লেখ করে।
আলোচ্য অংশে traditional pair হিসেবে eat→feed, dive→dip, learn→teach, fall→fell, lie→lay, know→inform, see→show, remember→remind, rise→raise, sit→set দেওয়া হয়েছে।
৩৬. Causative Pair Master Table
| Basic/Common Verb | Causative Verb | মূল ধারণা |
|---|---|---|
| eat | feed | কাউকে খাওয়ানো |
| dive | dip | ডুবানো |
| learn | teach | শেখানো |
| fall | fell | ফেলে দেওয়া/কাটা |
| lie | lay | শোয়ানো/রাখা |
| rise | raise | ওঠানো |
| sit | set/seat | বসানো |
| see | show | দেখানো |
| know | inform | জানানো |
| remember | remind | মনে করানো |
৩৭. Intransitive → Causative Transitive
একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ relation:
Rise → Raise
The sun rises.
→ subject নিজে ওঠে; no object.
He raised his hand.
→ subject hand-কে ওঠাল; object আছে।
Lie → Lay
The baby lies on the bed.
The mother lays the baby on the bed.
Fall → Fell
The tree fell.
They felled the tree.
এই transition-এ causative form সাধারণত Transitive হয়ে যায়। আলোচ্য অংশেও এটি স্পষ্টভাবে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে।
৩৮. সম্ভাব্য পরীক্ষার প্রশ্ন
He raised his hand. Here ‘raised’ is a—
ক. Copulative
খ. Cognate
গ. Factitive
ঘ. Causative
✅ সঠিক উত্তর: Causative Verb
কারণ: rise = নিজে ওঠা; raise = কোনো কিছুকে ওঠানো। এখানে subject তার hand-কে উপরে তুলেছে।
৩৯. সম্ভাব্য প্রশ্ন
Dip, Feed, Fell, Raise, Set — all these words are—
✅ Causative Verbs
কারণ প্রতিটি form অন্য person/thing-এর state/action ঘটানোর traditional causative relation প্রকাশ করে।
৪০. Modern Causative Construction — অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ Extra Data
Traditional causative pair-এর বাইরে contemporary English-এ সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ causative verbs:
make, let, have, get, help
British Council বিশেষভাবে have/get + object + past participle-এর causative use শেখায়; যেমন নিজের কাজ নিজে না করে অন্য কাউকে দিয়ে করানো।
🧩 Causative Structure Chart
| Causative | Structure | Example |
|---|---|---|
| make | make + person + V₁ | She made him apologize. |
| let | let + person + V₁ | Let him go. |
| have | have + person + V₁ | I had him repair it. |
| get | get + person + to + V₁ | I got him to repair it. |
| have/get | object + V₃ | I had/got my car repaired. |
৪১. Have/Get Something Done
I repaired my car.
→ আমি নিজে repair করেছি।
I had my car repaired.
→ আমি অন্য কাউকে দিয়ে repair করিয়েছি।
British Council causative have সম্পর্কে স্পষ্ট করে: causative construction-এ object auxiliary-like have এবং past participle-এর মাঝে থাকে—I have the walls painted ধরনের structure speaker অন্যের মাধ্যমে কাজ করায়।
Formula
have/get + object + V₃
have my hair cut
get the house painted
have the computer repaired
৪২. Factitive vs Modern Causative
| Factitive | Causative |
|---|---|
| They elected him captain. | They made him leave. |
| Complement = identity/state | Complement = action |
| him = captain | him performs leave |
| S+V+O+C | make/have/get + O + verb |
এই distinction objective MCQ-তে অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।
৪৩. Stative Verb
Stative Verb সাধারণত action/process না বুঝিয়ে state, perception, cognition, emotion, possession, relation বা condition প্রকাশ করে। আলোচ্য অংশে see, hear, feel, smell, taste, love, like, hate, believe, forget, appear, be, remain, have, own, owe, belong, deserve ইত্যাদি example দেওয়া হয়েছে।
প্রধান Stative Groups
| Category | Examples |
|---|---|
| Perception | see, hear, smell, taste |
| Emotion | love, hate, like, prefer |
| Cognition | know, believe, understand, remember |
| Possession | have, own, possess, belong |
| State/Appearance | be, seem, appear, remain |
| Relation | contain, consist, depend, deserve |
৪৪. Stative Verb সাধারণত Continuous হয় না
Standard neutral use:
✅ I know him.
❌ I am knowing him.
✅ She loves music.
সাধারণ state অর্থে She is loving music traditional exam grammar-এ avoided।
✅ This car belongs to me.
❌ is belonging
আলোচ্য অংশেও stative verb-এর continuous tense সাধারণত হয় না বলে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে।
৪৫. ⚠️ কিন্তু Rule Absolute নয়
Modern English-এ কিছু stative verb meaning change হলে dynamic/progressive হতে পারে। Cambridge teaching material-এ think ও be-এর stative/dynamic use এবং I’m loving this... ধরনের temporary enjoyment-ও দেখানো হয়েছে।
Compare
I think he is right.
→ opinion = stative
I am thinking about the problem.
→ mental process = dynamic
He is rude.
→ permanent/general quality
He is being rude.
→ temporary behaviour
৪৬. See — Stative vs Dynamic
I see a bird.
→ perception = stative
I am seeing the doctor tomorrow.
→ meeting/appointment = dynamic use
She is seeing someone.
→ dating = dynamic lexical meaning
অতএব “see কখনো continuous হয় না”—এমন absolute rule ভুল।
৪৭. Have — Stative vs Dynamic
I have a car.
→ possession = stative
I am having lunch.
→ activity = dynamic
She is having a shower.
→ event/activity
এই distinction BCS-এর Tense chapter-এও কাজে লাগে।
৪৮. Taste / Smell / Feel
State/Linking
The soup tastes good.
The flower smells sweet.
I feel tired.
আলোচ্য examples-এ এগুলো state/perception হিসেবে দেখানো হয়েছে।
Dynamic Action
The chef is tasting the soup.
She smelled the flower.
He was feeling the fabric.
অর্থাৎ একই verb meaning বদলালে progressive বা transitive action use নিতে পারে।
৪৯. State of Mind & Emotion
আলোচ্য অংশে love, hate, like, believe, forget, appear-কে non-progressive mental/emotional state হিসেবে grouped করা হয়েছে এবং Everybody loves his mother; I often forget your name উদাহরণ দেওয়া হয়েছে।
Modern inclusive usage-এ generic possessive হিসেবে their-ও natural:
Everybody loves their family.
৫০. State of Being
be, become, remain state/identity/linking relation প্রকাশ করতে পারে:
We are Bangladeshi.
He is a brave boy.
I remain silent.
আলোচ্য অংশে এগুলো State of Being/Linking Verb হিসেবে দেখানো হয়েছে।
৫১. Dynamic / Action Verb
যে verb actual action/process/event বোঝায়, তাকে Dynamic/Action Verb বলা যায়:
run, eat, laugh, write, go, work, play
এগুলো progressive aspect নিতে পারে:
He is eating.
She is running.
Cambridge teaching material-এ dynamic verb-কে action/process এবং stative verb-কে opinion/preference/state হিসেবে contrast করা হয়েছে।
৫২. Stative বনাম Dynamic — Master Comparison
| Stative | Dynamic |
|---|---|
| state/condition | action/process |
| know | learn/study |
| believe | consider/discuss |
| own | buy/sell |
| belong | move |
| love | kiss |
| seem | change |
| সাধারণত progressive নয় | progressive natural |
Core Formula
State = what something IS/FEELS/KNOWS
Dynamic = what someone/something DOES/HAPPENS
৫৩. Linking–Copulative–Inchoative Relationship
LINKING / COPULAR VERB
│
┌───────────────┴──────────────┐

Copulative Inchoative focus
He seems tired → linking state
He became tired → linking + state change
He grew tired → inchoative change
The dog went mad → copulative + inchoative sense
অর্থাৎ traditional labels অনেক ক্ষেত্রে overlap করে।
৫৪. Advanced Verb Classification — একই Sentence-এ Multiple Labels
The sky turned red.
turned:
- Main/Lexical Verb
- Finite Verb
- Linking/Copular use
- Inchoative অর্থে change of state
They elected him captain.
elected:
- Main/Lexical
- Finite
- Transitive
- Complex-transitive
- Traditional Factitive
He raised his hand.
raised:
- Main
- Finite
- Transitive
- Traditional Causative counterpart of rise
এটাই advanced grammar-এর মূল lesson—একটি verb একাধিক grammatical dimension-এ একসঙ্গে classify হতে পারে।
৫৫. High-Yield Structure Comparison
| Structure | Verb Type | Example |
|---|---|---|
| S + V + C | Linking | He became angry. |
| S + V + O | Transitive | He opened the door. |
| S + V + O + C | Factitive/Complex Transitive | They made him captain. |
| S + V | Intransitive | The baby cried. |
| V + Cognate O | Cognate | He dreamt a dream. |
| Verb + Particle/Prep | Group/Phrasal | She takes after her mother. |
| Cause + O + Verb | Causative | She made him leave. |
৫৬. ⚠️ Factitive-এর Complement Noun-ই হতে হবে না
They painted the door red.
door = Object
red = Object Complement
The news made him happy.
him = Object
happy = Object Complement
অতএব Factitive/complex-transitive complement noun phrase বা adjective phrase দুটোই হতে পারে।
৫৭. Resultative Construction — Factitive-এর সঙ্গে সম্পর্কিত Extra Concept
She wiped the table clean.
He hammered the metal flat.
Cambridge examples-এ He’s a cousin of mine, This coat feels good, She remained outside ইত্যাদি আছে।
Examples
He is a doctor. → noun phrase
He seems tired. → adjective phrase
She remained outside. → adverbial complement
The keys are on the table. → prepositional phrase
তাই “linking verb-এর পরে অবশ্যই adjective”—এটি exam shortcut, universal modern rule নয়।
৫৯. Semi-modal — One-Look Chart
| Form | Modal-like | Main/Lexical |
|---|---|---|
| dare | He dare not go. | He doesn’t dare to go. |
| need | You needn’t wait. | You don’t need to wait. |
| used to | I used to play. | historical semi-modal pattern |
| ought to | You ought to go. | fixed semi-modal pattern |
Cambridge dare, need, ought to, used to-কে standard semi-modal set হিসেবে চিহ্নিত করে।

৬১. Common Exam Trap: Fell
fell দুটি সম্পূর্ণ আলাদা grammatical identity নিতে পারে:
fall-এর Past
The tree fell yesterday.
→ fall–fell–fallen; intransitive।
Causative Verb “fell”
They felled the tree.
→ fell–felled–felled; অর্থ tree কেটে/ফেলে দেওয়া; transitive causative।
Memory
tree fell = নিজে পড়ল
they felled tree = তারা ফেলল
৬২. Rise–Raise–Arise
| Verb | Meaning | Object? | Forms |
|---|---|---|---|
| rise | ওঠা | no | rise–rose–risen |
| raise | ওঠানো | yes | raise–raised–raised |
| arise | উদ্ভূত হওয়া | no | arise–arose–arisen |
Problems arose.
Prices rose.
The government raised taxes.
এটি BCS vocabulary + verb form—দুই জায়গায় useful।
৬৩. Lie–Lay — Master Table
| Meaning | V₁ | V₂ | V₃ | Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| শোয়া | lie | lay | lain | Intransitive |
| রাখা | lay | laid | laid | Transitive/Causative |
| মিথ্যা বলা | lie | lied | lied | Intransitive |
Examples
He lies on the bed every day.
He lay there yesterday.
He has lain there for hours.
কিন্তু—
Lay the book on the table.
He laid it there yesterday.
৬৪. Cognate বনাম Factitive Object
He dreamt a dream.
→ dream Cognate Object; verb-এর সঙ্গে lexical relation।
They elected him captain.
→ him object + captain Object Complement।
Difference
Cognate → Verb ↔ Object related
Factitive → Object ↔ Complement related
৬৫. Group Verb vs Ordinary Verb + Preposition
He looked at me.
→ look + at prepositional construction; meaning predictable।
He looked after me.
→ look after = take care of; lexical meaning substantially different।
He took the book.
→ take ordinary verb।
He takes after his father.
→ resemble; idiomatic/group verb।
এটাই lexicalized group verb identification-এর key।
৬৬. Stative Verb — Progressive Exceptions Chart
| Stative Meaning | Dynamic Meaning |
|---|---|
| I think he is right. | I’m thinking about it. |
| I have a car. | I’m having lunch. |
| The soup tastes good. | He is tasting the soup. |
| I see a bird. | I’m seeing my doctor. |
| He is rude. | He is being rude. |
| I love coffee. | I’m loving this experience. |
Cambridge explicitly notes that some verbs such as be and think can be both dynamic and stative, and love/like/hate can take dynamic progressive in temporary enjoyment contexts.
৬৭. ⚠️ Source-based Rules vs Modern Grammar — BCS-এর জন্য গুরুত্বপূর্ণ

| Factitive Verb | Complex-transitive verb + object complement |
| Cognate Verb/Object | Cognate object construction |
| Group Verb | Phrasal/prepositional/phrasal-prepositional verb |
| Common Verb | Usually lexical/main verb |
| Semi-modal | dare, need, ought to, used to |

৭২. 🚀 BCS Last-Minute Super Capsule
Linking Verb = Subject + Verb + Subject Complement ⇒ He became a politician; Honey tastes sweet ⇒ Subject = Complement দিয়ে দ্রুত identify করা যায়। Cambridge-এর core linking verb হলো be, appear, feel, look, seem, sound, get, remain, smell, taste, become।
Copulative হলো traditional linking use—go mad, come true ⇒ Inchoative change of state—get tired, grow dark, turn red, become rich ⇒ সব Linking Verb Inchoative নয়, কিন্তু অনেক Inchoative construction copular/linking।
Factitive = S + V + O + Object Complement ⇒ call him a fool, elect him captain, make him chairman ⇒ passive করলে He is called a genius; active object passive subject হয় এবং complement নতুন subject-কে identify করে।
Cognate Object = verb-এর related noun object—dream a dream, live a life, sing a song; Merriam-Webster-ও sing a song-এর মতো construction cognate substantive হিসেবে উল্লেখ করে।
Group/Phrasal Verb = particle/preposition-এর সঙ্গে lexical meaning—take after = resemble ⇒ modern grammar-এ phrasal, prepositional এবং phrasal-prepositional verb আলাদা করা হয়।
Semi-modal = dare, need, ought to, used to ⇒ He dare not go বনাম He doesn’t dare to go; You needn’t come বনাম You don’t need to come। Cambridge-ও এ চারটিকে semi-modal হিসেবে classification করে।
Causative ⇒ traditional pair eat→feed, fall→fell, lie→lay, rise→raise, sit→set এবং modern structures make + O + V₁, let + O + V₁, have + O + V₁, get + O + to-V₁, have/get + O + V₃। British Council-এর causative explanation-এ have/get something done অন্য কাউকে দিয়ে কাজ করানোর standard pattern হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
Stative = state/perception/emotion/possession ⇒ সাধারণত progressive কম হয়—know, believe, love, own, belong; কিন্তু rule absolute নয়। think, be, have, taste, see, love meaning বদলালে dynamic progressive use নিতে পারে—I’m thinking, he’s being rude, I’m having lunch, she’s tasting the soup। Cambridge-ও dynamic/stative meaning change-এর এই distinction স্বীকার করে।
🎯 Final Master Formula
SUBJECT = COMPLEMENT → LINKING
CHANGE OF STATE → INCHOATIVE
OBJECT = COMPLEMENT → FACTITIVE
VERB ↔ RELATED OBJECT → COGNATE
VERB + PARTICLE = NEW MEANING → GROUP VERB
CAUSE SOMEONE/SOMETHING TO ACT → CAUSATIVE
STATE, NOT ACTION → STATIVE
MODAL + MAIN-VERB BEHAVIOUR → SEMI-MODAL
